Besigye and Lutale’s Fate Hangs in Balance as Military Court Weighs Supreme Court Ruling

Kampala, Uganda – The legal team representing Retired Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide Hajji Obeid Lutale has demanded their immediate release from the Military Court, citing Saturday’s Supreme Court ruling that declared it unconstitutional to try civilians in military courts.

Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, and Lutale were remanded by the Makindye-based Military Court Martial on charges related to security, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and treason.

However, the Supreme Court’s ruling has cast doubt on the legitimacy of their trial in a military court. In light of this development, Besigye’s legal team has vowed not to appear before the General Court Martial on Monday next week.

The team further argues that the military court lacks jurisdiction to try the two men, who are civilians.

The detention of Besigye and Lutale has sparked widespread condemnation from opposition supporters and human rights groups.

The Ugandan government has denied allegations of political interference in the judiciary, claiming that the courts are independent and impartial.

The Supreme Court’s ruling has significant implications for the trial of Besigye and Lutale, and it remains to be seen how the Military Court will respond to the demand for their release.
