Traders to resume their sit-down strike on Monday next week.

NEWS: Business community from Kampala are set to resume their sit-down strike on Monday next week after the plans to meet the president over the 18% value-added tax (VAT) imposed on every sold commodity, went fruitless.

On Tuesday this week, the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) called off planned traders’ demonstrations that were allegedly set to happen on Monday, April 8, 2024.

In a meeting between the Traders and Minister for Kampala Capital City & Metropolitan Affairs, Minister said that there is no any appointments scheduled between the Traders and the president  

According to Henry Tamale – Trader FUTA Traders were promised through different meetings that the president would be meeting the business community to start with the people within Kampala.

Tamale said that to their dissatisfaction and disappointment they were informed that there is no appointment with the president, thus calling upon the business community to lay down their tools not until their Questions are filled with answers.

“We were promised through different meetings that the president will be meeting the business community to start with the people within Kampala and to our dissatisfaction and disappointment we have been told that it will not be held as it was scheduled for today Friday” said Henry Tamale.

The Chairperson of KACITA Mr. Thadeus Musoke Naggenda, Traders feel the government has fully neglected them and per the Leadership on 16th April this Year the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) Leadership is going to step aside. 

Speaking this reporter the URA Spokesperson Ibrahim Bbosa insisted that the tax regime being implemented via the Electronic Fiscal Reporting and Invoicing Solution (EFRIS) is not a tax but rather a digital platform that facilitates the direct transfer of VAT billing information between businesses and URA and has nothing to do with double taxing. 

Among the issues affecting traders include; Corruption within the URA, Education about the Tax correction, Manufacturer who go beyond manufacturing and do products vending to the final consumers.
