Baryayanga Launches Initiative to Revive Dormant Kashanje Water Scheme

KABALE, UGANDA – Kabale Municipality MP Aspirant Andrew Aja Baryayanga has launched a major initiative to resuscitate the long-dormant Kashanje Gravity Flow Scheme, promising to end years of persistent water shortages for residents.

The water scheme, which serves the Northern Division of Kabale Municipality, has been non-functional since falling into disrepair following the Aja’s departure from the Parliament.

Demonstrating his commitment on Thursday, the former MP and current aspirant on the ruling NRM ticket personally visited the site to assess and accelerate the rehabilitation work.

He explained that after years of poor maintenance, a technical team is now on the ground repairing key components, including essential valves and fittings, to restore the water flow.

A central part of the rehabilitation involves the thorough cleaning of a 30,000-litre water tank, which is crucial for the next phase of the operation.

Baryayanga added that once cleaned, this central tank will feed water downstream through the gravity-fed system, providing a sustainable and pump-free water source for the community.

“Water has already begun entering the tank. The remaining task is to complete the cleaning process before we can release the water to flow downstream,” he said.

However, Baryayanga noted a significant challenge: all 23 original public tap stands that once served the community have been destroyed or vandalized.

“We are now identifying where the water will be directed once the system is restored so that we can also work on rebuilding the tap stands as our next phase,” he stated.

Baryayanga also announced an ambitious plan to rehabilitate the Bugongyi Gravity Flow Scheme, which supplies water to both Upper and Lower Bugongyi areas.

The Kashanje Gravity Flow Scheme is expected to provide clean, reliable water to more than 4,000 residents, dramatically improving public health and reducing the burden of fetching water from distant sources.

The initiative underscores his commitment to tackling the fundamental issue of water access, with the ultimate goal of ensuring all residents in the municipality have access to clean and safe drinking water.
