Speaking during a high-level planning meeting with senior UPDF officials and local government leaders at the Kanungu District Council hall, RDC Mwesigye underscored the profound importance of the occasion.
He stated that the UPDF would partner with the communities ahead of the celebrations on initiatives for quick impact, including building infrastructure, organizing medical camps, teaching patriotism, holding football matches, and supporting veterans.
“We laud His Excellency the President for this honour. The UPDF will collaborate with local communities through various initiatives, including the construction of schools, roads, and bridges. These civil-military cooperation efforts will greatly benefit our communities,” Mwesigye said.
Major General Henry Masiko, the focal person for the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations, stated that the UPDF leadership strategically selected the Kigezi sub-region for its pivotal role in Uganda’s liberation struggle.
He explained that the celebrations are a dual-purpose event: honouring the founding of the National Resistance Army (NRA), now the UPDF, while simultaneously executing activities that bolster community welfare and strengthen the vital bond between the citizens and their army.
Major Gen. Masiko, from the Joint Staff in the Political Commissariat, further noted that due to the forthcoming general elections, preliminary activities will commence earlier than usual to ensure full and meaningful engagement with the local population.
The Kanungu District LC V Chairperson, Eng. Sam Arinaitwe Kajojo, urged the army to incorporate a large-scale tree-planting exercise into their programs.
He specifically advocated for planting trees along major roads, such as the Kanungu-Kihiihi-Nyamirama-Rukungiri route, to aid in environmental conservation and beautify the district ahead of the national event.
The 2026 Tarehe Sita celebrations are set to be a landmark event, encompassing the entire district within the Kigezi sub-region, marking a historic moment of pride and progress for the region.
