The Chairperson of Kabale University Council, Adison Kakuru, has announced plans to name some of the the institution’s buildings and roads after its deceased founders.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Mr. Kakuru, who is also former Kabale District LC.5 Chairperson and former Rukiga County Member of Parliament, made the remarks on Friday, during the 10th graduation ceremony of Kabale University since it became a public institution.
A total of 1,673 students graduated across various academic fields, with seven earning PhDs.

In his speech, Kakuru highlighted several prominent individuals who played a pivotal role in the university’s inception. He recalled that Kabale University began as a community-run institution in 1995, before officially opening in 2002 with only 42 students, after acquiring land in 1999.
“This university has become the largest academic institution in the Kigezi Sub-region. However, most of those who helped develop it are no longer with us. When the time is right, I will present a detailed list of these individuals for recognition.” Kakuru stated.
The deceased founders of Kabale University include the late Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, former Governor of the Bank of Uganda; former Supreme Court Justice Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba, the university’s first Chancellor; and Ephraim Manzi Tumubweine, former State Minister of Privatization who served as Chairperson of the University Council at the time of his passing in June 2021.
Others include former Ndorwa East MP Avitus Tibarimbasa, Justice Amon Twinomujuni who served as Uganda’s Director of Public Prosecutions from 1981 to 1984,Eng. Ezekiel Balaba, Patricia Nkundeki, James Musinguzi Garuga, and Festo Karwemera, among others.
Kakuru said that Kabale University has a Master Infrastructure Plan (2020-2063), which provides a long-term blueprint for developing modern infrastructure and facilities on its 53-acre campus. He added that some of the buildings and roads would be named after the deceased founders, honoring their “immense contribution” to the institution’s growth and development.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joy Constance Kwesiga, attributed the university’s rapid growth to its status as a public institution, achieved ten years ago. She revealed that student enrollment had increased from 2,666 in the 2016/17 academic year to over 7,500 as of October 2025, representing an approximate increase of 181.4%.
Prof. Kwesiga also highlighted that the university had attracted numerous national and international scholarships, benefiting over 1,000 students annually.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, State Minister of Finance, Henry Musasizi, said he was impressed upon learning that the student population had reached 7,500. He credited this growth to strategic leadership and the commitment of the university’s Council and management.
“I want to congratulate the University Council and Management for bringing the university this far. This is remarkable, Prof. Joy Kwesiga and your team. Kabale University is now one of the institutions that make Kigezi proud, and I thank you sincerely.” he said.
On behalf of the government, Musasizi pledged continued support and invited the university management to his office at the Ministry of Finance to discuss their budget and explore ways the government can assist in the upcoming financial year.
