Political Earthquake in Rukiga: NUP Storms NRM’s Turf in High-Stakes MP Race

RUKIGA, UGANDA – Rukiga District is witnessing a significant political realignment as the Woman Member of Parliament contest evolves into a direct clash between the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The race features NUP’s Hon. Jolly Jackline Tukamushaba against NRM’s Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe, marking NUP’s strategic entry into the district, historically a stronghold of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Hon. Tukamushaba, who serves as the NUP Deputy President in charge of Western Uganda on its Central Executive Committee, represents the party’s concerted effort to expand its influence in a region where it has previously had a limited presence.

Meanwhile, the NRM’s Dr. Alinaitwe enters the race with considerable momentum after a stunning primary victory over the incumbent, Hon. Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi.

This win demonstrated a shift in voter sentiment within the ruling party and established Dr. Alinaitwe as a formidable political force in her own right.

Her primary victory effectively ended Muhwezi’s bid for re-election, clearing the path for her to carry the NRM flag.

With the incumbent absent, the contest sets the stage for a fresh battle between two new major candidates, both politically credentialed but untested at the parliamentary level.

Political observers predict a campaign that will “shake the region,” noting that both dynamic candidates are positioning themselves as Rukiga’s most effective legislative advocate.

The race is a critical test for both parties: for the NUP, it measures their ability to challenge the NRM’s national machinery, while for the NRM, it is a chance to prove its continued dominance with a new candidate.

All eyes are on Rukiga as the approaching nomination week sets the stage for a clash that is more than a local race, but a microcosm of Uganda’s broader political realignments.
