In an official statement released on Sunday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Josephat Ainomugisha, confirmed that Arinda Owen, a first-year student pursuing a National Certificate in Agriculture, was among four suspects arrested by police for their alleged involvement in a series of violent attacks and robberies that rocked the municipality on October 1, 2025.

“As a university, we condemn all forms of criminal behavior and reiterate that any actions contrary to our values and national laws remain the personal responsibility of the student,” said Mr. Ainomugisha. “We appreciate the swift action by security agencies and assure the public of our full cooperation in the ongoing investigations.” He added.

The PRO emphasized that St. Ignatius University’s mission is to train responsible and law-abiding citizens and that the institution does not tolerate any conduct that undermines public safety.

According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the four identified as Arinda Smith (25), Akandwanaho Kennedy, Arinda Owen alias Shakido, and Asasira Mark (24) are believed to be behind the murder of a security guard and the robbery at Albertine Hotel, where Loyce Kanyoro was also critically injured. The group later attacked the home of Sunday Kenneth at Nyabikoni, stealing a Toyota Noah UBP 471V, which was later abandoned at Mwanjari after being used to transport stolen property.

The same gang allegedly attacked Vian Ngororano (32), an employee of Kabale High Court, at Kamatojo Cell, Mwanjari Ward, during which the victim bravely fought back, injuring one of the assailants with a panga.

Following coordinated operations in Kabale, Mbarara, and Mpigi Districts, police arrested the suspects and recovered several stolen items including mobile phones, a television set, the ignition key to the stolen vehicle, and other property belonging to the victims.

Maate said that the suspects face multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and theft, adding that further investigations are underway to apprehend their accomplices.

In a separate briefing, Kabale District Police Commander Charles Okello revealed that police had earlier arrested six other suspects linked to similar violent crimes in the area. These included Owomugisha Allan alias Nyarukwisi, Kirabo Alex, Aryampa Elijah, Byaruhanga Ronald alias Buduki, Asiimwe Osbert, and Owamani Derrick Marvin.

“We shall not tire until every suspect behind criminal activities in our community is arrested and prosecuted,” said DPC Okello, commending residents for their vigilance and cooperation with the police.
