In a media briefing, the Deputy Spokesperson for the Electoral Commission, Paul Bukenya, provided detailed insights into the process and the current field of contenders, revealing a record number of initial interest.

Electoral Commission Deputy Spokesperson Paul Bukenya confirmed that NRM candidate President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is scheduled to be the first aspirant formally nominated, with his arrival set for 10:00 am on Tuesday.

He added that there was an overwhelming level of interest, with over 200 presidential aspirants having picked up nomination forms.More than 30 of these aspirants returned the completed forms.

He further stated that the commission issued certificates of compliance to those who returned the forms with the required signatures, which allows them to proceed to the next level.

The EC Deputy Spokesperson noted that some presidential aspirants’ support signatures were invalidated during scrutiny because many signatures came from the same towns or areas, violating the rule that each person can support only one aspirant.

According to the Electoral Commission’s earlier updates, only three presidential aspirants have met the nomination requirements, including the ruling NRM candidate, President Yoweri Museveni; the opposition FDC candidate, Nathan Nandala Mafabi; and independent candidate Joseph Male Mabirizi.

Presidential aspirants are required to submit 9,800 signatures from at least 98 districts, representing two-thirds of Uganda’s 146 districts.
