WAKISO, UGANDA – The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has confirmed that a man electrocuted while tampering with a high-voltage power line in Wakiso was not an employee of the power distributor nor a worker for any of its contracted maintenance companies.

The deceased has been identified as Gerald Mutalya, a local resident of Nakuwade, who was electrocuted on Friday, September 12, 2025, while allegedly attempting an illegal electricity connection along Sentema Road in Natete.

According to a press release issued on Saturday and signed by Mr. Kiiza Jonan, the Head of Corporate & Stakeholder Affairs at UEDCL, the incident occurred at approximately 3:00 PM. Mutalya was reportedly tampering with a 33kV feeder line from the Mutundwe Substation.

Preliminary investigations by UEDCL confirm the deceased was not an employee or contractor, but an unauthorized individual, locally known as a “Kamyufu.”

His body was recovered from the scene, and a case has been officially filed with the Natete Police Station as investigations into the circumstances continue.

UEDCL sternly warned the public that unauthorized access to the electricity network, often for illegal power hookups, is extremely hazardous and frequently leads to fatal accidents.

In the wake of the tragedy, the company has reiterated its plea to the public, urging communities to immediately report any safety concerns such as downed lines, sparking equipment, or other faults through its official, toll-free channels.

The company emphasized that seeking assistance for official connections or repairs is the only safe alternative to the lethal risks of illegal tampering.
