Kigezi, Uganda – The Kigezi sub-region was struck by tragedy over the weekend as two separate murder incidents were reported in Kisoro and Rubanda districts, along with a suicide in Kanungu district.

In Kisoro district, the body of Hategeka Bosco, a 40-year-old resident of Gasarara village, Soko parish, Muramba sub-county, was discovered lying along the road at Kanyenka Trading Center.

Reports indicate that on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at around 7:00 PM, Bosco left home to attend a vigil for a relative in Rusenyi village while his wife prepared to attend another vigil in a nearby village.

The following morning, as she returned home, she received a call informing her that her husband had been found dead.

Upon arriving at the scene, she confirmed the heartbreaking discovery. Police at CPS Kisoro were alerted by George Haguma, and officers visited the scene, processed evidence, and deployed a canine unit, though no leads were found.

The victim had suffered a deep cut on his chin, chest injuries, and a large stone placed on his head and after examination, his body was released to relatives for burial.

In a separate incident in Rubanda district, the lifeless body of Ruhugye Zaverio, a 65-year-old resident of Nyakayenje cell, Kitojo parish, Bubare sub-county, was found along the path to his home.

It is reported that on Saturday evening, Zaverio returned from grazing cattle before heading to Hakabungo Trading Center for leisure.

When he failed to return home, his wife searched for him but found no trace and in the next morning, his son, Agaba Urban, discovered his father’s body near the road while heading home from his shop.

Police were notified, processed the scene, and conducted a postmortem examination. Meanwhile, in Kanungu district, a 37-year-old man identified as Nkamwesiga Victor, a resident of Rutooma cell, Kashojwa parish, allegedly took his own life.

Victor had reportedly disappeared from home on Saturday evening and was found the following morning hanging from a jackfruit tree near his residence.

Police from Rugyeyo responded and documented the scene. Relatives revealed that Victor had a history of mental health issues and had been receiving treatment at Katate Health Center IV, which may have contributed to the tragic incident.

Kigezi Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incidents and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind the murders and identify suspects.

Maate further made a passionate appeal to the public, urging anyone with information that could aid investigations to come forward.

“Community cooperation is crucial in solving these crimes. No detail is too small – if you know something, please report it to the nearest police station so that we can determine where to begin,” Maate emphasized.

The string of violent incidents has left residents across Kisoro, Rubanda, and Kanungu districts in deep mourning and disbelief, with many struggling to come to terms with the brutality of the murders and the tragic suicide, while others now question the safety of their own neighborhoods.
