Ntungamo, Uganda – A severe storm has ravaged Rukoni West Sub County in Ntungamo district, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.

The disaster, which occurred on March 27 and again on April 2, 2025, has affected multiple cells, including Nyakabale I, Kigomero, Kanonko, Kitogotsi I, II, and III, Rwensinga, Kakindo, and Ruhanga.

The storms destroyed various crops, such as beans, coffee, bananas, and onions, and also left homes, churches, and schools without roofs.

Residents are now facing a severe food security crisis, with many fearing they will be forced to steal to survive.

LC III Chairperson Mr. Mwine Frank has appealed to the government for urgent intervention, stressing that the situation is dire.

He specifically called upon area leaders, including Hon. Benjamin Katangura Kamukama and LCV Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigoba, to contact relevant authorities for assistance.

Residents, like Ms. Ruth Twebaze Kabeera, have lost their entire crops and are now regretting the labor they invested in preparing their gardens.

Others, like Mr. Dan Mwebesa and Mr. Benon Kangume, have expressed concerns about their livelihoods, as their sources of income have been severely impacted.

The Rukoni West Sub County speaker, Mr. Otim Mayrs, has echoed the sentiments of the LC III chairperson, calling upon the government to provide relief items, such as maize flour and beans, to affected residents.

The disaster has affected two parishes, Nyakabale and Rukoni, with 20 cells impacted. Residents are now waiting anxiously for government intervention to alleviate their suffering.
