The directive follows a meeting with traders at State House Entebbe yesterday after a five-day business closure by traders protesting multiple taxation through EFRIS, a system introduced by URA to aid in tax collection.

In a brief statement made by the Kampala Central Division Mayor, Salim Uhuru while addressing some traders who were waiting to hear the President’s decision after an indoor meeting that took hours.

Among the issues raised by the traders in the meeting include; the tax on textiles calculated based on kilograms is high and Manufacturers who engage in wholesale and retail leave no room for traders to do business resulting in unfair trade.

They also raised an issue about the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution (EFRIS) which they claim is not suitable for most of them and when they don’t use it they are penalized.

In his remarks the president asked the traders to give him time to research more and consult the technocrats on all the concerns raised and pledged to meet all the traders on 7th May, 2024, at Kololo to discuss further.

The president further directed that tax collection body URA refrain from issuing penalties and recovering any penalties that have already been issued as taxpayers continue to pay their taxes as usual.
