Kigali, Rwanda – Former Rwandan Army Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa, has made explosive claims that Rwanda has been exploiting mineral resources in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for years, using soldiers to secure control over key areas.

In an exclusive interview with Journalists, Nyamwasa linked the ongoing conflict involving RDF/M23 rebels to the illegal extraction of Congolese minerals.

Nyamwasa’s allegations are not new, as there have been long-standing accusations of Rwanda’s involvement in the illegal mineral trade in the DRC.

A 2001 UN report found that Rwanda, along with other countries, was involved in the illegal exploitation of the DRC’s natural resources, including diamonds, gold, and coltan.

The illegal mineral trade is said to have been fueling conflict in the region, with various armed groups, including the M23 rebels, fighting for control of mineral-rich areas.

The DRC is rich in mineral resources, with an estimated $24 trillion worth of minerals, including cobalt, copper, and gold.

DRC has long accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels, which Rwanda denies with the current tensions resulted to thousands of deaths with hundreds of thousands of people displaced.

Nyamwasa’s allegations have sparked renewed calls for accountability and transparency in the mineral trade charging the international community to take action in ensuring that the mineral resources of the DRC are used for the benefit of its people.
