Appearing before the different Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kampala on Tuesday evening, the accused were charged and remanded to Luzira Prison for participating in an unlawful Assembly.

They all pleaded not guilty to the “common nuisance” charge and are due to re-appear before the different courts which remanded them between July 30-August 6, 2024.

Yesterday turned into a busy day among the security forces ensuring a peaceful environment in some parts of Kampala following the last week’s threats of match to the Parliament protest over the corruption scandals surrounding the institution.

Preceding over the afternoon Parliamentary session on Tuesday, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa said that Parliament has been made the face of corruption with the picture, painted by individuals pointing at the institution which they think caused them problems.

“Parliament’s budget isn’t even 1% of the national budget, so, are people failing to get roads because of Parliament? Are people failing to get jobs because of Parliament? Are people failing to get schools because of Parliament? Are we failing to get pay rise because of Parliament? I think we must sit and agree that some people want to stand on the moral high ground, then Parliament, we look like we are the face of corruption in the country” said Thomas Tayebwa.

The President of Uganda Gen Yoweri K Museveni, last week warned that the demonstrators could be“playing with fire” pledging to continue a fight against Corruption, with Several government officials faced with corruption charges.
