Speaking at the Outpatient Department at Kambuga Hospital, Minister Balaam expressed satisfaction that there was no crowding in the waiting line, noting that all early patients had been attended to.
The Minister identified the hospital’s major problem as the failure to promote long-serving doctors, expressing shock that some at Kambuga have worked 26 years without promotion while junior staff who joined a few years ago have been promoted.
“I was shocked to find that some doctors here have worked for 26 years without promotion, while juniors who joined only a year or two ago have been promoted. This is our hospital’s biggest problem and it must stop,” Minister Balaam noted.
Minister Balaam accused the District Service Commission of promoting relatives, wives, and girlfriends instead of hardworking staff, describing the practice as corruption, nepotism, and favoritism.
He directed the district leadership to ensure that the five doctors at Kambuga Hospital and four doctors at Kanungu Health Centre IV Katate are promoted immediately, provided there is wage bill capacity.
The Minister also inspected Kanungu Health Centre IV Katate, where he found poor hygiene and sanitation, particularly in both the patients’ and staff latrines.
He noted that the dirty latrines pose a health risk to patients and health workers and urged the facility’s in-charge to address the challenge immediately before it escalates into a bigger problem.
The Clinical Medical Officer at Kambuga Hospital, Dr. Kasuda, highlighted several challenges affecting the facility, including understaffing and inadequate beds, which he said need to be addressed to improve service delivery.
Meanwhile, the Minister further urged the administrations of both facilities to write a comprehensive report to the Minister of Health for action in case some of the necessary requirements are lacking at the facilities.
