Bishop Twinomujuni Calls on Priests to Champion Unity and Poverty Eradication

"Preach unity, not division," Bishop Twinomujuni told clergy at West Ankole's Annual Diocesan Council, as he unveiled a major reshuffle and challenged church leaders to fight poverty, support the needy, and keep the Church relevant in communities. The new Dean of St. Peter's Cathedral Bweranyangi, Very Rev. Can. Richard Mubangizi, leads a wave of transfers aimed at renewing spiritual and administrative service across the diocese.

BUSHENYI – The Bishop of West Ankole Diocese, Rt. Rev. Johnson Twinomujuni, has issued a clarion call for clergy to step forward and bridge the widening gap between the Church and the faithful.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

The Bishop made these remarks on Monday, August 17, 2026, during the Annual Diocesan Council sitting held at the Bweranyangi Cathedral Main Hall in Bushenyi District.

Bishop Twinomujuni reminded clergy that the mission of the gospel transcends the pulpit, calling them to champion unity, development, and poverty eradication in their communities.

He urged them to preach a unifying message that transforms lives and builds faith, while exemplifying steadfast servanthood and divine leadership wherever they are stationed.

“The gospel we preach must be one that transforms lives and brings people together, not one that creates division. It should strengthen the faith of our people and unite them in purpose. To do this, you must be faithful servants, portraying divine leadership in your new stations of work,” Bishop Twinomujuni stated.

Bishop Twinomujuni explicitly directed clergy to show love, care, and unity in the face of segregation, insisting that priests must serve with compassion and deeply understand the challenges facing their parishioners to keep the Church relevant and present in society.

He challenged church leaders to become catalysts for economic and social change by intensifying efforts to fight domestic violence and support the needy within their communities.

Bishop encouraged parents to invest in their children’s schooling and promote self-reliance, while also directing clergy to sensitize Christians on embracing government programs aimed at improving household incomes.

He further underscored that the Church must take a leading role in eradicating poverty by urging the faithful to engage in hard work and become self-sufficient, thereby improving their livelihoods and benefiting from national development initiatives.

“The Church has a huge role in ensuring our people benefit from development initiatives. Let us encourage hard work and self-sufficiency, for these are the pathways to better livelihoods and lasting transformation,” Bishop noted.

Meanwhile, Bishop Twinomujuni announced a major clergy reshuffle across the diocese to enhance service delivery, with The Very Rev. Can. Richard Mubangizi appointed as the new Dean of St. Peter’s Cathedral Bweranyangi.

Previously serving as Archdeacon of St. Stephen’s Kashenshero Archdeaconry, he now takes over from Ven. Rev. Makuru in this pivotal leadership position, tasked with shepherding the cathedral’s spiritual and administrative affairs.

In a chain of transfers:

· Ven. Rev. Makuru has been moved to Greater Bushenyi Archdeaconry, replacing Ven. Rev. Can. Natweta.

· Ven. Rev. Can. Natweta has been transferred to Kabwohe Archdeaconry, taking over from Ven. Rev. Can. Muhwezi Benon, who has been granted sick leave following a recent accident.

· Additionally, Rev. Able Nabaasa Mulangira, who previously served as parish priest at St. James Kaburengye Parish, received a well-deserved promotion to Archdeacon and has been transferred to St. Stephen’s Kashenshero Archdeaconry.

The newly appointed leaders expressed confidence that their new roles would bring renewed energy and spiritual growth to the diocese.
