KYANKWANZI – Repatriated Ugandan nationals from conflict-hit South Africa have been advised to practice consistent condom use and avoid risky sexual behaviors as a safeguard against HIV transmission.

The health charge was issued by Dr. Vincent Baingana on Tuesday while addressing the assembled returnees at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi, striking a tone of both urgency and paternal care.

Dr. Baingana told the returnees that returning home safely is a gift, but protecting that gift requires deliberate action, especially having come from South Africa, a country with a high HIV burden.

He urged the participants to seize the opportunities to make informed choices that safeguard their health and the future of their families, while tackling the realities of HIV with honesty and compassion.

“Having safely returned from South Africa, a country with a high HIV burden, you stand at a crossroads of opportunity. This is your chance to make informed choices that will safeguard your health and the future of your families,” Dr. Baingana urged.

Dr. Baingana encouraged returnees living with HIV to come forward without shame, assuring them that Kyankwanzi is fully equipped with antiretroviral drugs and confidential counseling, with care readily available.

Meanwhile, mothers who returned with children under the age of six were welcomed into a spacious medical pavilion, where a dedicated team of healthcare workers provided free, comprehensive pediatric services.

The medical outreach runs parallel to the ongoing ideological training program organized by the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps under State House, designed to ease the reintegration of the returnees into Ugandan society.

The initiatives are geared toward protecting the health and overall well-being of the returnees and their children as they undergo reintegration and embrace national orientation.

An additional 166 Ugandan nationals were received at Entebbe International Airport late on Monday night from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa, bringing the total number of repatriated citizens to 726.
