KAMPALA – Police have confirmed the arrest of the Mbarara City businesswoman on serious allegations of impersonation as a State House official and obtaining money by false pretenses.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The suspect, now in custody, has been identified as Hope Tumwebaze, 53, a resident of Kamukuzi in Mbarara City, who stands accused of falsely presenting herself as an official attached to the Office of the President.
Sources allege that between June 2025, at various locations across Kampala, Tumwebaze approached an unsuspecting MP with a compelling promise that she could facilitate access to government funds purportedly earmarked for selected districts.
The complainant reportedly transferred a staggering UGX 60 million to the suspect, whose elaborate scheme now forms the basis of serious charges of impersonation and obtaining money by false pretenses.
The Uganda Police Spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke, confirmed that following the complaint, authorities opened a General Enquiry File (GEF), which subsequently led to the suspect’s arrest.
Rusoke confirmed that Tumwebaze remains in custody while investigations continue and warned the public, especially leaders and officials, to verify any government-related facilitation claims through proper official channels.
He further emphasized that financial commitments should never be made based on unverified representations and urged citizens to promptly report any suspected impersonation or fraud to the nearest police station.
“Members of the public are advised to verify any claims of government-related facilitation through the appropriate official channels before making financial commitments,” Rusoke emphasized.
