Orthodox Bishop Urges Parents to Prioritize Education Over Business for Children

NTUNGAMO – Parents have been encouraged to embrace education and intentional parenting as vital tools to curb illiteracy and raise a generation of responsible, development-minded future citizens.

The appeal was made by Bishop Robert Baluku of the Orthodox Church of Uganda during an engagement meeting with parents of Rise and Shine Nursery and Primary School in the District.

The gathering, held at the school premises in Nyeihanga Kyabukuju Ward, Rubaare Town Council, Ntungamo District, sought to forge a roadmap for helping pupils achieve their life goals through academic excellence.

Bishop Baluku observed that a worrying number of parents are sidelining education, which he called the first and non-negotiable priority for every child.

He warned, drawing from real-world economic realities, that a child who drops out of school to venture into business may amass wealth and buy luxury items, but a lack of foundational knowledge often proves fatal.

Bishop Baluku further implored parents to retain their children in school to acquire essential skills for both employees and employers, while also supporting schools whenever needs arise.

“Many parents are ignoring education, but it is the first and most important thing for every child. A child may leave school, start a business, buy cars, and get rich, but without basic knowledge, they will fail. Such a child may do well for a short time, but when it comes to counting money or making good plans, they will make mistakes,” stated Bishop Baluku.

Meanwhile, Orthodox Bishop Baluku, who revealed ambitious plans to establish a hospital and other developmental infrastructure in the area, did not mince words regarding the dangers of parental apathy.

Hon. Enos Kangume, the Rubaare Town Council LCIII Councilor, vowed to secure the school’s operational license and appealed to the teaching staff to remain focused and dedicated.

He further stressed that the development of the school depends entirely on synergy among parents, teaching staff, compliance with the board of directors, and the district education department.

“Development of this school will only come where there is synergy among parents, teaching staff, compliance with the board of directors, and the district education department,” Kangume stated.

Boaz Twazarwa and Ninsiima Ester, both parents, said the establishment of Rise and Shine Nursery and Primary School has brought them a sigh of relief.

They recounted the daily perils their children previously faced, trekking long distances for education, vulnerable to harassment by strangers and the constant threat of road accidents.
