KAMPALA – The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has formally endorsed Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as its preferred candidate for the position of Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The endorsement, which effectively consolidates the ruling faction’s support behind the former Deputy Speaker, was announced via social media by the PLU Chairperson, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
In a Twitter post issued on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, morning, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba confirmed that his endorsement came after guidance from the Commander-in-Chief, President Museveni.
Kainerugaba, who is Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), further directed all Patriotic League of Uganda MPs and PLU-leaning legislators to rally behind Thomas Tayebwa for the position of Deputy Speaker.
“After getting guidance from the Commander-in-Chief, all PLU MPs and PLU-leaning MPs will support Rt. Honourable Thomas Tayebwa for the position of Deputy Speaker. Congratulations, Rt. Honourable,” Kainerugaba noted in a post.
The announcement quells days of behind-the-scenes speculation regarding the leadership of the next Parliament, following the PLU’s earlier withdrawal of their endorsement of Anita Among for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
The group further fronted Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth for the Speakership position, solidifying their withdrawal of previous support for incumbent Speaker Anita Among.
Following the endorsement, Thomas Tayebwa welcomed the announcement from PLU Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and extended his heartfelt thanks to the President for the trust and confidence reposed in him.
Hon. Tayebwa reaffirmed his commitment to working closely and harmoniously with Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth if the latter is elected Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
“Thank you very much, my senior brother and Chairman, for your kind endorsement. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Mzee H.E. the President for the trust and confidence in me. I look forward to working closely and harmoniously with my senior brother Hon. Oboth Oboth,” Thomas Tayebwa responded.
The election for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament is scheduled for next week, as lawmakers formally begin their legislative duties following their swearing-in ceremony last week.
