The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at approximately 3:00 PM in Lhume Village, Kitswamba Town Council, Kasese District, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Reliable sources indicate that the ill-fated motor vehicle (UAS 323Z), carrying over 20 passengers, was being driven from Rukoki in Kasese Township to Lhume Village in Kitswamba Town Council en route to a burial ceremony.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that as the driver approached the burial site in Lhume, navigating a sloping section of the road, the vehicle experienced catastrophic brake failure.

The driver tragically lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn, claiming the life of one person on the spot, with the rest of the passengers sustaining injuries of varying severity.

The Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that the police were promptly notified of the incident, and a team of officers immediately visited, assessed, and documented the scene of the accident.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Kasese Municipal Mortuary, where a postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The Samaritans at the scene rushed the injured victims to various unidentified medical facilities for urgent treatment, while the vehicle was towed to Rugendabara Police yard pending inspection.

Maate confirmed that as investigations into the tragic accident are ongoing, experts are working to determine and establish the exact cause of the catastrophic accident.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time. Our officers are working tirelessly to ensure that all necessary procedures are followed,” stated Maate.

Meanwhile, the Police have since urged motorists to prioritize vehicle safety, exercise extreme caution while driving on slopes, and follow traffic rules to prevent further tragic deaths.
