KAMPALA – The leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially endorsed Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth for Speaker, solidifying its withdrawal of previous support for incumbent Speaker Anita Among.

The endorsement was confirmed on Friday, May 15, 2026, by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and PLU Chairperson, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also serves as the Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, hailed Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth as the most effective minister in the government over the past five years.

He further declared his full and unequivocal endorsement of the minister for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament, a role that will span the 2026–2031 term.

“He has been the best Minister in our government for the past 5 years. I want to be the first to endorse him for Speaker of Parliament (2026-2031),” Gen. Muhoozi posted.

The announcement marks a stunning reversal of the League’s earlier position, as just days prior the Patriotic League of Uganda had officially endorsed Anita Annet Among and Thomas Tayebwa for Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively.

The endorsement was formally reversed in a May 12, 2026, letter issued by PLU Secretary General and Kasambya County MP, Hon. David Kabanda, confirming the party was walking back its declaration from earlier this year.

Hon. Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs and Vice Chairman of PLU Western, confirmed Hon. Oboth as the League’s official candidate, emphasizing that the Supreme Chairman’s decision is final.

“As declared and announced this morning by our Supreme Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, our candidate for Speaker of Parliament is the Rt. Hon. Oboth Oboth. The decision of our Supreme Chairman is final,” Minister Balaam posted.

Political sources indicate that the shift follows a tense, high-level meeting chaired by President Museveni in Entebbe, which reportedly dealt a significant political blow to Speaker Among.

Meanwhile, insiders suggest the controversial Central Executive Committee (CEC) resolution endorsing Among and Tayebwa has been reopened, with key figures quietly mobilizing behind Jacob Oboth Oboth ahead of the May 25 vote.
