Police confirm its commitment to safeguard the Uganda Martyrs pilgrims.

KAMPALA-UGANDA: As the Martyrs day Cerebrations draw closer the Uganda Police Force has expressed its commitment to safeguard all pilgrims from different parts of the country and the neighboring countries.

The Police Commitment was issued by the Police Spokesperson SCP Enanga Fred on Monday, while updating the Media on the Weekly Security Matters.

Police Spokesperson informs the public that all pilgrims, who are trekking the long journey trail, from different parts of the country and the neighboring countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC, are all safe.

He added that this has registered an increase in the number of foot pilgrims this year saying that the Police are on course to escorting and protecting over 2600 pilgrims across the country.

“As we draw closer to the popular Uganda Martyrs day, we wish to inform the public that all pilgrims, who are trekking the long journey trail, from different parts of the country and the neighboring countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC, are all safe. This year 2024, we have registered an increase in the number of foot pilgrims and we are committed to the safety of all pilgrims. So far, we are escorting and protecting over 2600 pilgrims across the country” said Enanga Fred.

The first batch of 144 pilgrims from the Diocese of Kakamega, entered Uganda through Malaba, 64 pilgrims from Kitale Kenya, entered the Country through the Suam border, Bukwo district and teamed up with other pilgrims.

Another  73 pilgrims from the Kenyan Catholic Dioceses of Kakamega, Eldoret and Kiisi, entered Uganda through Busia border post and another 171, pilgrims from the Catholic Church of Eldoret Kenya, entered Uganda through Busia.

The foot pilgrims within the country being escorted by Police include; 272 pilgrims from Kasese 531 from Nebbi, 900 from Lira 350 from Gulu 200 pilgrims from the DRC, Rwanda, Kisoro district and Rubanda district who by this reporter had passed to Masaka.

SCP Enanga Fred confirmed to the Media that the Uganda martyrs Children’s Day celebrations were successfully held on the 23rd May 2024 at the Anglican Site and the prayers were led by Bishop Emeritus Ssebagala James of Mukono Diocese

He added that over 4000 children gathered from all dioceses of the Church of Uganda accompanied by 489 teachers.

They were accompanied by 489 teachers” said Enanga Fred. Enanga Fred further urged those walking to use the opposite side of the road, to enable them to see oncoming motor vehicles, travel in groups, walk in a row, wear jackets or eye-catching clothes, and keep an eye on their belongings and to avoid carrying large amounts of money.
