Cries of Disbelief as Man is Remanded for Killing His Wife, a Popular Leader

NTUNGAMO, UGANDA – The Ntungamo Grade One Magistrate’s Court has remanded agricultural officer Rodgers Tayebwa to Ntungamo Government Prison as he awaits trial for the alleged murder of his wife.

Mr. Tayebwa, 36, was arrested by police for his alleged involvement in the death of his wife, Rachael Akampurira, 35, the former Town Agent for Rukiga Central ward in Mpora Town Council, Rukiga District.

The case has taken a dramatic turn from a reported robbery to a suspected domestic homicide, with reliable sources indicating the incident began on the night of February 9, 2026.

Mr. Tayebwa initially reported to police that he and his wife were riding a motorcycle to Rubaare Town Council when they were ambushed by unknown assailants at Omungyenyi-Katinda bridge in the Kyamugashe-Rwemiyaga area.

Tayebwa’s initial account alleged that armed attackers beat his wife to death with sticks, stole their motorcycle and other belongings, while he managed to escape to seek help.

However, investigators quickly became suspicious of Tayebwa’s account, with sources close to the investigation revealing that the couple had a history of domestic misunderstandings.

More critically, a medical examination revealed no injuries on Tayebwa’s body, a glaring inconsistency that, combined with the couple’s history of domestic issues, led investigators to doubt his account of escaping a violent attack.

Appearing before the Grade One Magistrate’s Court presided over by His Worship Edgar Kakuru, Tayebwa was formally charged with murder, an offence under Sections 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act.

Due to the capital nature of the offence, the Magistrates’ Court lacked jurisdiction to try the case, and Tayebwa was consequently not permitted to enter a plea and was instead remanded to prison until April 23, 2026.

The tragic death of Ms. Akampurira and the subsequent charges against her husband have sent ripples of grief and disbelief through both the Ntungamo and Rukiga communities, as residents await the outcome of the investigations.
