Rukungiri Community Demands Urgent Action on Stalled Water and Power Projects

Electricity poles stand tall, and water trenches run deep, but after seven long years, Kamunyu Cell in Rukungiri District has neither power nor piped water. Residents, weary of broken promises, are now making an urgent call to government: deliver the basic services that neighbouring communities have long enjoyed, or risk leaving an entire village behind in the race for development.

RUKUNGIRI – Residents of Kamunyu Cell in Rukungiri District have expressed deep frustration over idle electricity poles and a water project that has dragged on for nearly seven years without completion.

Despite visible infrastructure, poles erected and trenches dug, the village, located in Kinyamahwa Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-county, remains without electricity and clean water, pushing the community further behind other areas in the region.

Speaking to this reporter, Niwagaba Sylvia, a resident of Kamunyu Cell, expressed dismay over the prolonged failure to complete the water and electricity projects despite infrastructure being put in place years ago and repeated appeals to local leaders.

She passionately called on the government to step in, insisting that reliable electricity and clean water are essential for unlocking business opportunities and improving livelihoods in the community.

Fellow resident Ivan Musinguzi said the community has grown deeply weary after nearly seven years without electricity, a situation that has systematically denied them the opportunity to establish businesses and enhance their overall standard of living.

He observed that nearby trading centres and villages have long enjoyed the benefits of electricity and clean water, while Kamunyu continues to languish in a frustrating state of stagnation and marginalization.

Yoweri Nkwasibwe, a local leader from Kagyera Cell in Kinyamahwa Town and mayor of the trading centre, confirmed that residents have repeatedly raised the issue of electricity.

“Residents have complained endlessly about the lack of electricity. Power poles were installed, and efforts were made to bring wires to the area, but for years, no connection has been made,” Nkwasibwe admitted.

He also pointed to poor roads as another major challenge affecting the community, expressing optimism that the government would address these pressing issues during its new term.

Residents have since urged the government to act with urgency on the stalled water and electricity projects, arguing that access to basic services is not a luxury but a fundamental right critical to unlocking development in the community.
