KABALA, UGANDA – Properties worth 30 million Uganda Shillings were reduced to ashes following a fire outbreak at Child Care Nursery and Primary School in Kabale district on Monday evening.

The fire outbreak caused severe structural damage. The property destroyed includes beds, books, clothing, mattresses, and other belongings, with an estimated total loss of approximately 30 million Uganda Shillings.
The Kigezi police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, stating that the police were notified of the blaze by the school director, Mbeinenamukama Innocent, after the outbreak.
Maate said that upon receiving the distress call, a fire tender (UP 4719) crew led by SP Muhanguzi Moses and commanded by Sergeant Driver Bikorwomuhangi Andrew was immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the fire brigade found that flames had already gutted a boys’ dormitory on the third floor, but they acted swiftly to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to the rest of the building and surrounding areas.
Maate confirmed that no lives were lost, noting that preliminary investigations suggest an electrical short circuit as the cause, though a full inquiry is underway to determine the exact circumstances.
“Upon arrival, the fire brigade found a boys’ dormitory on the third floor already gutted but swiftly extinguished the flames, preventing further spread. No lives were lost, though the dormitory sustained severe damage to its structure and contents, including beds, books, clothing, and mattresses, with estimated losses of about 30 million Uganda Shillings,” confirmed Elly Maate.
Meanwhile, the police have urged school administrators and the public to regularly inspect their electrical wiring and avoid overloading sockets, especially during dry or high-usage periods.
The police further urged school administrators to immediately install essential fire safety equipment and ensure emergency exits are always accessible and clearly marked.
