KANUNGU, UGANDA – Police in Kanungu District have arrested individuals accused of maliciously defacing campaign materials belonging to a parliamentary candidate contesting against a cabinet Minister.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The suspects now in custody have been identified as Ayamba Akim, 33, a resident of Rumba Cell, and Namara Edson, 25, a bodaboda rider and resident of Kanungu Cell, Western Ward, Kanungu Town Council.
The two, along with others still at large, allegedly targeted a billboard at Kanungu Trading Centre displaying posters of Hon. Eng. Sam Arinaitwe Kajojo, an independent candidate for Kinkizi East Constituency.
Reports indicate that the suspects’ actions, which occurred over the weekend of January 4th, 2026, at approximately 3:00 AM, were interrupted by the vigilance of a night watchman stationed at JAS Petrol Station, one Baguma Martin.
Alerted by suspicious noises, Baguma investigated the scene and was able to positively identify Ayamba Akim and Namara Edson among the perpetrators.
The Kigezi Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that Kanungu Police swiftly registered a formal case of Defacement of Campaign Posters.
Maate added that a team of officers examined the crime scene and recovered the damaged posters, which have been logged as key evidence in the ongoing investigation.
“Efforts to bring to book the remaining suspects are underway. People should desist from acts of lawlessness and should always adhere to the Electoral Commission guidelines for the smooth running of the exercise,” Maate stated.
Police authorities have confirmed that inquiries into the matter are continuing as they work to apprehend the other suspects and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Kinkizi East constituency parliamentary race continues to be relevant as the incumbent District Chairperson seeks to unseat the incumbent MP and cabinet Minister in the 2026 general elections.
