The deceased has been identified as Vian Ainembabazi, 32, a resident of Omutaba village, Kyokyezo parish, Nyamweru sub-county, Rubanda district.

He was allegedly assaulted to death by his in-laws on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, in the afternoon at Nyamabale village, Kafunjo Parish, in the Nyakishenyi Sub County, Rukungiri district.

Reports indicate the tragedy stems from domestic misunderstandings last month between Ainembabazi and his wife, Rita Kadugara.

The incident led Kadugara to return to her parents’ home, a move which reportedly enraged Ainembabazi and prompted him to follow her.

It’s alleged that Ainembabazi repeatedly attacked his wife and her parents, including one incident where he threw his father-in-law’s clothes into a pit latrine.

On another occasion, he allegedly stole seven iron sheets from the same family, prompting repeated reports to local village chairpersons in both Rukungiri and Rubanda districts.

Kigezi Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed that Ainembabazi again attacked the family home, prompting the sons of Justus Kadugara (his father-in-law) to reportedly fight back and chase him to Kafunjo hill.

“According to our information, Ainembabazi returned and attacked the family home, but this time, the sons of Justus Kadugara fought back. They chased him to Kafunjo hill, where they allegedly lynched him,” stated Elly Maate.

Maate added that the incident was reported by eyewitness Ndyahebwa Anthony, after which police promptly visited the scene, documented evidence, and recorded witness statements.

The body was conveyed to Rwakabengo HC III mortuary for postmortem as police affirmed an active manhunt for the suspects is underway.

Police are appealing to the public for any further information that could lead to the swift apprehension of the suspects and are urging against any form of mob justice.
