Kawala stated that the victims, who were recruited from various upcountry districts by a company called Dream Visionaries, hail from areas including Mbarara, Bushenyi, Kabale, Ntungamo, Mityana, and the Busoga region.
She confirmed that the victims were lured with promises of lucrative online jobs after completing a training course.
However, they were each required to pay a UGX 150,000 fee and were confronted with a starkly different reality upon arrival.
“The victims were enticed with promises of high-paying online jobs after so-called training, but this was merely a pretext to exploit vulnerable youth by charging them a fee. Upon arrival, they discovered a reality completely different from what was promised,” Kawala revealed.
Reliable sources indicate that the victims were confined to small rooms and immediately isolated, with their phones confiscated for the first six days.
Following a six-day period of complete isolation with no outside contact, each captive was individually given a phone to make one strictly controlled call.
They were coerced into fraudulently soliciting UGX 1.5 million from their families, falsely presented as necessary ‘start-up capital’ for the promised business.
Kawala confirmed that the 47 individuals were rescued after the escaped victim provided critical intelligence.
The victims are now receiving care and support as a manhunt for the scheme’s director intensifies.
Police warn the public, especially young people and parents, to be extremely vigilant against job offers that require upfront payments or seem too good to be true.
