KAMPALA, UGANDA – Traffic Police has confirmed the arrest of a bus driver who was found operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a potentially catastrophic situation that was averted in the early hours of Sunday.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, the driver, Ziringura Ronard, of Gateway Bus Company (UBM 706X), was apprehended at 1:56 a.m. on November 30, 2025.
Kananura told the press that Ronard was subjected to a routine test at a checkpoint and was found to be over the legal alcohol limit while in charge of the passenger bus.
“We confirm the detention of Ziringura Ronard. He was tested and found to be under the influence of alcohol while operating the bus. Ziringura is currently detained at Mpigi Police Station and will appear in court tomorrow to answer charges of driving under the influence of alcohol,” stated SP Kananura.
The arrest is a success for the intensified “Arrive Alive” operations, which are using rigorous driver testing to prevent accidents and ensure safety during a period of high traffic.
Kananura issued a stern warning to all motorists, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving and confirming that active checkpoints across the country will continue to test drivers.
“We strongly warn and caution all motorists against drinking and driving. Our checkpoints across the country are fully active and continuously testing drivers. The safety of every passenger and road user is our utmost priority,” he said.
The swift action by the traffic police has been hailed by safety advocates as a crucial intervention that likely prevented a tragedy, ensuring that the passengers and other road users were protected from harm.
