RUKUNGIRI, UGANDA – Residents in Rukungiri district have launched a communal work initiative to rehabilitate the dilapidated Kikonkoma road by clearing drainage channels and refilling potholes.

The project lunched in Nyeibanga Cell, which will connect the Rusheshe road to the Rweshaka main road, has been hailed as a critical effort to boost local agriculture and trade.

Nyeibanga Cell LC I Chairperson Dickens Niwamanya confirmed the launch and expressed collective optimism about the project’s potential to transform the area.

He stated that the road’s poor condition has severely hindered the transport of people and goods, particularly agricultural produce like bananas.

“This road has made transporting our produce very difficult. The rehabilitation will ease transportation, which will in turn boost our entire community,” Niwamanya stated.

He further praised the communal work approach as commendable, highlighting the community’s hard work, unity, and shared spirit.

Hellen Kabajungu, the LC III Chairperson of Ruhinda, echoed this sentiment, confirming the road’s long-standing poor state.

She called for a continued, unified effort, stating that such shared ownership is crucial for securing the project’s success for generations to come.

Isaac Kaharuza, representing the Minister of Security and Rujumbura County MP, Gen. Jim Muhwezi, praised the residents’ self-help initiative.

He emphasized that such community efforts are vital for development, especially for infrastructure under the sub-county’s jurisdiction.

Demonstrating this support, Gen. Muhwezi backed the initiative by providing a donation of essential tools, including hoes, hand axes, spades, and pangas.

“The Minister’s support demonstrates his commitment to improving the lives of his constituents. These tools will not only help with this road but will also help residents develop skills and potentially generate income through other projects. I urge you to keep these tools safe and use them responsibly,” said Kaharuza.

The rehabilitation of Kikonkoma Road stands as a testament to what a community can achieve when it comes together, turning collective effort into a paved path toward a more prosperous future.
