Colonel Kyakabale was a key figure in the Rwandan war that contributed to the fall of former Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana, a conflict that placed him at the heart of a pivotal moment for the Great Lakes region.
However, he later fell out with his former commander, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, a rift that forced him into decades of exile in Sweden.
In a move toward national reconciliation, President Museveni later granted Kyakabale a pardon, paving the way for his return to Uganda and appointing him as a Senior Presidential Advisor on Reconciliation.
This role aimed to leverage his tumultuous past and insider knowledge to foster unity a past that was widely acknowledged in tributes following his death, which honored his earlier contributions to the nation’s liberation.
Authorities are now coordinating with his family to arrange for the repatriation of his body from Sweden to Uganda for burial.
Further developments are expected to follow……….
