KABALE, UGANDA – The Minister of State for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives (Industry), Hon. David Bahati, has praised the Diocese of Kigezi for its innovative and forward-thinking development programs, highlighting them as a benchmark for sustainable growth and income generation.

Prossy Akampurira, during the Diocese of Kigezi Bishop’s Development Fund (BDF) fundraising event held on Saturday at Rugarama Hill in Kabale Municipality.
In his message, Minister Bahati specifically applauded diocesan initiatives such as the Hass avocado project and the establishment of a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO).
He emphasized that these programs are crucial for fostering economic empowerment and community self-sustainability,creating a resilient model that reduces dependency on external aid.
“These initiatives by the Diocese of Kigezi are not only commendable but also set a benchmark for other institutions seeking sustainable development,” Bahati stated.
He further praised the church’s commitment, particularly through its BDF program, which is designed to mobilize resources for various projects to ensure the diocese’s long-term financial stability and growth.
The fundraising event was a resounding success, garnering an impressive total of over 800 million shillings through cash donations and pledges from well-wishers and stakeholders.
Demonstrating his tangible support,Minister Bahati personally contributed 10 million shillings towards the cause, a move that galvanized other attendees to open their purses.
The primary objective of the BDF is to complete the construction of a 3.1 billion shilling commercial mall along the Kabale – Kisoro Road.
The project, which is being constructed by Murumba & Company Building and Construction Limited, is anticipated to be a significant source of income for the diocese upon its completion later this year.
The Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, expressed profound gratitude to the Christians for their generous contributions.
He also extended thanks to the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for his role in promoting national unity and peace across all religious denominations and acknowledged the positive impact of the President’s poverty eradication initiatives on local communities.
The event was graced by prominent figures from across the country, including Jafer Basajjabalaba, who represented chief guest Al-hajji Hassan Basajjabalaba, NRM party flag bearers Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe and Enid Origumisiriza and the entire business Community signifying widespread support for the diocese’s visionary project.
