KAMPALA, UGANDA – His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo as the new Principal Judge, marking a key leadership transition within Uganda’s judicial system.

Hon. Lady Justice Abodo’s appointment was confirmed by the Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, Hajji Faruk Kirunda, via his account on X (formerly Twitter), where he stated that her name has been forwarded to Parliament for the necessary approval.
“I hereby confirm that the letter circulating on social media regarding the appointment of Hon. Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo as the new Principal Judge is authentic. Her name has been forwarded to Parliament for the necessary approval. I congratulate her,” Faruk Kirunda’s Twitter message read in part.
Hon. Lady Justice Abodo, the highly respected and current Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), is widely recognized for her integrity, expertise, and dedication to the rule of law.
The role of Principal Judge, which is critical to the efficient functioning of Uganda’s justice system, carries considerable responsibility, including the administration of the High Court and oversight of all High Court judges.
Justice Abodo’s appointment concludes the tenure of Hon. Justice Dr. Flavian Nzeija as Principal Judge of Uganda, who had held the position since his appointment by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in May 2021.
The nomination will now proceed to Parliament, where the Appointments Committee is expected to commence a thorough vetting process.
This will include a review of Justice Abodo’s credentials, a public hearing, and a committee vote before the final recommendation is presented to the full House for approval.
This appointment is being closely watched by legal experts and stakeholders, who view it as a pivotal step for the future of judicial administration in Uganda.
