Second Grisly Murder in Kigezi: Bound Woman Found in Sack Dumped in River

Kanungu, Uganda – The Kigezi sub-region has been rocked by yet another gruesome killing after the lifeless body of an unidentified woman was discovered bound with ropes and stuffed inside a green sack, dumped in River Ntungwa, Kanungu District.

The horrific find was made on August 2, 2024, around 3:00 PM, when a group of young boys fishing in the river spotted a suspicious green sack trapped in the water.

Upon opening it, they were met with the shocking sight of a woman’s corpse, prompting them to alert authorities immediately.

Local leaders, including the Chairperson of Kanabizo Cell, mobilized, and defense secretary David Kasigeire reported the incident to police.

Just months before this killing, the region was shocked by the brutal murder of Nkanshabe Evelyn, 35, owner of Kyarenga Bar in Muhanga Town, whose mutilated body missing eyes, ears and private parts was discovered on a Rubare roadside.

Reports indicate that Evelyn, also known as Shamirah, had gone missing after receiving a call from a man identified only as Brian, believed to be her boyfriend.

He allegedly invited her for drinks before she vanished, prompting her family to report her disappearance – only for her mutilated remains to be later discovered, sparking public outrage.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed that officers swiftly secured the River Ntungwa crime scene, retrieved the body, and transported it to Kanungu Health Center IV Mortuary for an autopsy.

Maate said the victim was likely murdered in the early hours before being dumped in the river, and appealed to the public to help identify her by reporting missing female relatives.

“The body was still fresh, suggesting she was murdered in the morning and later dumped. We appeal to the public to assist in identifying her so she can be laid to rest as investigations continue,” Maate said.

Residents are now living in fear, with two brutal murders in quick succession raising concerns of a possible serial killer or ritualistic killings.

Police have launched a full-scale investigation but have yet to establish a motive or connection between the two cases.
