Kampala, Uganda – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has witnessed a significant development in its internal leadership race, with former Ugandan Speaker Rebecca Kadaga announcing her candidacy for the 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female) position.

The development comes hot on the heels of Speaker Anita Among’s highly publicized declaration to contest for the same seat, following a flurry of consultation meetings with NRM delegates from various districts.

Kadaga, who is also the First Deputy Prime Minister, expressed confidence in her bid, stating that she doesn’t feel the heat in the race despite competing against Among.

Speaking to the media as she picked nomination forms to stand on the Kamuli District Woman MP party ticket, Kadaga emphasized her determination to vie for the position.

The contest between Kadaga and Among has generated significant interest within the NRM, with Among’s announcement following a series of consultation meetings with party delegates from various districts, including Rukiga, Rukungiri, Kabarole, Mbarara district, and Mbarara City.

Kadaga took issue with Among’s claim that the NRM 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female) position was reserved for the sitting Speaker, dismissing it as unfounded.

According to Kadaga, the position is open to any female party member, with its foundation based on having a lady at the Central Executive Committee (CEC) seat.

Kadaga’s assertion underscores the competitive nature of the contest and her resolve to challenge Among’s perceived advantage.

The NRM’s internal leadership contest is expected to be closely watched, given the prominence of the two candidates and the potential implications for the party’s future direction.

As the contest heats up, both Kadaga and Among are likely to engage in vigorous campaigning, seeking to win the support of party delegates and stakeholders.
