Bishop Mbitse Urges Christian Politicians to Shun Violence, False Promises

Kisoro, Uganda – The Bishop of Muhabura Diocese, Rt. Rev. Mbitse Godfrey, has called on aspiring Christian politicians in the ongoing 2025/26 elections to refrain from hatred, violence, threats, murder of opponents, and making false promises.

The Bishop made this appeal during the naming and opening of St. Paul’s Bugara Church of Uganda in Gitovu Archdeaconry, Mupaka Town Council, Kisoro District.

Bishop Mbitse expressed concern over the loss of lives during election campaigns, describing it as a moral failing in society.

He cautioned Christians against giving poorly in thanksgiving to God, reminding them that everything they possess comes from God, who is the giver and taker of all things.

The Bishop urged Christians to engage in peace-promoting activities, addressing domestic violence and disputes, and to seek repentance if involved in harmful acts like poisoning others.

While thanking Christians for their church efforts and encouraging continued support, Bishop Mbitse was also urged by the congregation to help improve access to clean water, which is currently sourced from unsafe outlets that exacerbate malaria cases.

The Christians highlighted the challenges faced by pregnant women who walk long distances to fetch water, despite living close to the church.

They also informed the Bishop about their initiative to construct a new pastoral residence, as the existing one is old and unsuitable.

In response, Bishop Mbitse acknowledged the water issue, stating that it is a technical matter that requires consideration.

He assured the congregation that the diocesan department will explore ways to address the issue and potentially bring clean water to St. Paul’s Bugara Church of Uganda.

This appeal comes after the launch of a gravity water scheme worth over 100 million shillings at Gitovu Archdeaconry headquarters in August 2024, which has raised hopes among Christians that they might also benefit from similar initiatives.
