Recognizing the increased travel and higher traffic volumes during this period, the Directorate acknowledges the greater risk of crashes and is urging all road users, including motorists, motorcyclists, passengers, and pedestrians, to take additional precautions.

According to Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, key road safety guidelines have been outlined for all road users to follow.

These guidelines include refraining from drinking and driving, avoiding speeding, wearing seatbelts and helmets, and ensuring both riders and passengers are properly protected.

Road users are also advised to avoid distractions while driving, particularly the use of mobile phones, and to remain focused on the road. Respecting traffic signs and signals is crucial, as they are designed to save lives.

“We’re committed to safeguarding lives. We’ve outlined key road safety guidelines: no drinking and driving, avoid speeding, wear seatbelts and helmets, avoid distractions, and respect traffic signs. We also urge passengers to speak out against reckless driving, drivers to be responsible, and the public to plan journeys carefully and ensure vehicle roadworthiness,” said Michael Kananura.

The Directorate will intensify enforcement efforts during the Easter period, with increased patrols and checkpoints targeting key areas such as unlicensed drivers, vehicles in poor mechanical condition, drink driving, reckless driving, route compliance, and vehicle identification.

The goal is to minimize the risk of accidents and ensure the safe return of all road users to their loved ones.
