A dramatic rescue operation was conducted on Sunday, April 6, 2025, as the victims, Mumbere Reagan, 12, and Mugume Devis, 8, from Kisojo Lower, Mubuku Town Council, had attempted to fish in the river despite the heavy thunderstorm.

According to the Rwenzori East Region-Kasese Police Spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime, the rescue operation was led by DPC Hima Division SP Nerima Bwire Suzan and DPC Kasese SP Bagenda Alfred, who worked together to locate and retrieve the trapped boys.

SP Nelson added that the operation was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the community, district local government, and Hima Cement Factory, whose prompt response and assistance were instrumental in saving the lives of the two young boys.

“Inexperienced and unsupervised young boys attempted to fish in the river, prompting a successful rescue by DPC Hima Division and DPC Kasese at 00:20 hours. We thank our partners, including the community, local government, and Hima Cement Factory, for their efforts,” said SP Nelson Tumushime.

The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has warned of unpredictable weather pattern changes in the Rwenzori Sub-region, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

In response to such weather conditions, UNMA plans to introduce more Automatic Weather Detector Machines in the region to improve weather forecasting and early warning systems.
