According to the press statement released by the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) on Tuesday, the African Ministers responsible for meteorology will be convening as the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET).

During the Ministerial Segment scheduled for May 16, 2024, the Ministers will be discussing the implementation of an Integrated African Strategy on Meteorology (2021 – 2030) on Weather and Climate Services.

The Integrated African Strategy on Meteorology provides Africa’s strategic road map for action on the development and application of weather, water and climate services for the continent’s social, economic, and ecological development.

AMCOMET encourages enhancement in the cooperation among meteorological services of African countries in order to promote coordinated and harmonized action on addressing development challenges related to weather, climate variability and change.

Uganda’s Minister of Water and Environment Hon. Sam Cheptoris is expected to chair the Ministerial Segment while the Executive Director of Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) Dr. Bob Alexandria Ogwang will chair the technical segment.

Uganda has in the recent past experienced unprecedented extreme weather events and the associated weather-related hazards.

According to UNMA, Uganda’s participation and Chairing of the Sixth session of AMCOMET presents an opportunity to Uganda to benefit from support at continental level and global level to radically transform Uganda’s Meteorological services to address the impacts of climate change.
