BUSHENYI, UGANDA – Police have recovered election materials, including a yet-to-be-quantified number of suspected ticked ballot papers, official declaration forms, and Electoral Commission seals in Bushenyi District.

The recovered electoral materials are suspected to have been left behind at Kizinda Town Council hall following the presidential and parliamentary general elections held on January 15th, 2026.

The Greater Bushenyi Police Spokesperson, SP Tayebwa Apollo, confirmed the incident, stating that police acted on a tip-off and conducted a swift operation at the council hall.

SP Tayebwa confirmed that officers immediately secured and managed the scene using standard procedures to preserve all evidence.

The police have arrested the responsible Electoral Commission officials from the Kizinda polling station, who are now assisting with the investigation into how the materials were left unsecured.

Police further urged the public to remain calm, avoid incitement, and share any information confidentially, pledging full transparency as the investigation proceeds.

“As Police, we urge any affected parties to refrain from any act of incitement. Anyone with information regarding this matter is requested to confidentially share it with us. We pledge to keep the general public informed as new developments emerge,” SP Tayebwa affirmed.

The incident comes at a sensitive time, just days after the general elections, and underscores the critical importance of strict chain-of-custody protocols for all electoral materials.
