The sole fatality has been identified as Ivan Tukamushaba, 58, a resident of Rutoma Bihobwalwa, Kihihi Sub County in Kanungu District. He was riding the motorcycle at the time of the collision.
The injured are Dan Nsubuga, the truck driver from Lugazi, Buikwe District, and Derrick Ashemeza, 12, a passenger on the motorcycle from the deceased’s locality.
The Kigezi Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the accident, stating that the driver of the truck, Dan Nsubuga, was traveling at high speed from the Kanyantorogo direction towards Butogota Bwindi.
Maate explained that the speeding truck hit a road hump, lost control, veered into the path of Ivan’s oncoming motorcycle, and knocked it off the road in an impact that killed him instantly.
“The primary cause of the accident is over-speeding and reckless driving by the truck driver. This could have been avoided if he had been driving in accordance with the highway code guidelines,” Maate added.
Maate further noted that police officers immediately visited, documented, and processed the scene. The body of the deceased was conveyed to Kihihi Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination.
Following the crash, the motorcycle has been impounded at Kihihi Police Station for an Inspection of Vehicles (IOV), and the truck is set to be towed there from the scene as inquiries continue.
