NTUNGAMO, UGANDA – Residents in Ntungamo district were reeling in shock after a shoemaker in his 50s died by suicide, following several failed attempts to end his life under circumstances that are not yet known.

The deceased has been identified as Posiano Sunday, who was found dead in his rented room on Saturday morning in Rubaare II cell, Kagango ward, Rubaare Town Council.

The incident, which occurred at around 8:35 a.m., has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns among local leaders about a troubling pattern of suicides in the area.

Neighbors made the grim discovery and alerted the deceased’s wife, Gladys Ninsiima, 42, who said she had already left for the market when she received the distressing call.

“I received a distress call from my neighbours that my husband had hanged himself inside our rented room using a rope. My efforts and neighbours’ efforts to rescue him were all in vain since I was far from the place of the incident and the neighbours failed because he had locked himself inside the room,” stated Ninsiima.

Tragically, neighbors revealed this was not the first attempt, stating the deceased had previously tried to end his life by both consuming poisonous substances and hanging, only to be rescued by alert residents.

While the motive remains under official investigation, neighbors pointed to severe domestic strife, alleging the deceased was a victim of domestic violence from his wife, as a contributing factor.

The local chairperson, Kenneth Byaaki, expressed deep concern over a recurring pattern, confirming this tragedy brings the total to over four hanging suicides in the area in recent years.

“Last year in December, two sons of one Kagyendabusha, both in their late 20s, died by suicide. In 2023, Niwahereza, also in his late 20s, died the same way. All were residents of Rubaare Town Council,” Byaaki stated.

In response to the tragedy, authorities have issued a renewed plea for the public to seek professional counseling when facing overwhelming stress, rather than resorting to suicide.
