KANUNGU, UGANDA – The Ministry of Water and Environment has launched a plan to sustainably manage local rivers and wetlands, including support for people affected by the conservation efforts in Kanungu District.

During a community meeting held on October 17, 2025, at the Zoroma Primary School playground, local leaders and government officials celebrated the launch of projects designed to help people earn more money while protecting the district’s precious water and land.
As organized by the Ministry of Water and Environment, a key part of the plan is to support people whose livelihoods are affected by these conservation efforts.
The Ministry of Water official Rita Kiteme announced several new income-generating projects designed to empower residents and provide sustainable alternatives.
The initiatives will support families through beekeeping, fruit farming, and the use of energy-saving cooking stoves to help them earn a better living.
At the meeting, Deputy Resident District Commissioner Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju emphasized the critical importance of protecting wetlands, describing them as the backbone of the region’s agricultural productivity and a vital resource for future generations.
The LC V Vice Chairperson, Henry Mwongyera, agreed that caring for nature is essential for building a healthier and wealthier future for everyone.
Gartrude Mutahakana, a senior officer from Kanungu, reminded the community that the provided tools and seedlings are an investment in their future, urging them to use the resources wisely to build a better life for their families.
During the meeting, Agaba George urged the community to plant trees, particularly bamboo near rivers, to protect the land. Separately, Niwagaba Jonnasan announced new fish farming projects in eight sub-counties to boost food supply and income.
Through these collaborative efforts, Kanungu District is building a future where communities are more resilient, incomes are higher, and the environment is protected for generations to come.
