KABALE, UGANDA – The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kabale, Maj. Godfrey Katamba, has called on the Police and Security Intelligence agencies to urgently track and apprehend unidentified individuals in possession of illegal firearms, warning that such threats could destabilize the region’s security ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Maj. Katamba made the remarks while addressing over 300 Police and Crime Intelligence Officers from Kigezi Sub-region after they completed an intensive five-day training in Public Order Management at the UNITE Campus in Kabale District.

“There are people moving with guns whose identities remain unknown. This poses a serious threat to our peace and must be addressed with urgency,” Maj. Katamba said.

He referenced a recent incident in which two identified people exchanged two guns at a petrol station in Kabale, which is still under investigation. He also raised concern over past electoral campaigns where certain politicians were seen accompanied by unidentified armed bodyguards.

“so, it is your duty now to hunt for these people, disarm them and apprehend them,” he stressed, urging officers to act with courage and dedication in the face of such challenges. “The country looks up to you as heroes who safeguard peace.”

A total of 341 police officers from the Kigezi region participated in the training program, which aimed to sharpen their skills in managing public order and responding effectively during the election period.

According to ASP Innocent Mbonyibyombi, the team leader and trainer, the course was designed to test and strengthen the operational capability of the region’s police force in anticipation of the 2026 elections.

Regional Police Commander (RPC) Alex Wabwire also commended the officers for their discipline and readiness to serve, noting that the training was a crucial step in preparing for any election-related unrest.

The trained officers will now be deployed across the six districts of the Kigezi region to lead efforts in maintaining law and order during the electoral season and beyond
