Kanungu, Uganda – Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju has urged the youth in Kanungu District to resist the temptation of short-term gains offered by politicians.

The appeal follows a disturbing pattern in which local youth are exploited by politicians for criminal activities during elections, only to be abandoned and left to face the consequences alone once political goals are achieved.

According to Deputy RDC Gad Rugaju, the underlying drivers of this exploitation crushing unemployment and a profound lack of opportunities remain largely unaddressed, leaving the youth in a perpetual state of vulnerability.

He stated that young people without jobs or stable income become easy targets for politicians who offer quick money and promises, only to disappear after elections, leaving the youth in worse situations than before.

The Deputy RDC emphasized that solving this problem requires practical solutions that create real opportunities.

Job creation programs can provide work through skills training and support for small businesses, while mentorship programs can guide youth toward better choices.

He called for community involvement in teaching young people about their rights and responsibilities to help them avoid exploitation, and stressed that laws must be strengthened to protect youth from being used by politicians.

“Different groups need to work together, including government ministries, community organizations, private companies, and local leaders. They should create programs that provide jobs and teach useful skills,” said Gad Rugaju.

The long-term goals are clear: protect youth from exploitation, create lasting opportunities, and build a community where young people can thrive honestly.

By addressing the root causes of youth exploitation and providing real alternatives, Kanungu can break this cycle and create a better future for its young people.
