Reliable sources allege that the deceased, together with a colleague, was from Kasese town and tried to cross when it had rained during the day. Both drowned, but his colleague was vomited by the water a few meters from the river shores.
The Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that the surviving colleague swiftly went and reported the incident to the school headteacher, Ndyanabo Christopher, who in turn alerted the police.
Maate noted that a search was launched very early on Monday by the police, along with locals and school authorities, from which the body was later retrieved and taken to Kasese Municipal HC III for postmortem.
“A joint search operation was conducted very early this morning by police, the school administration, and members of the community, leading to the recovery of the body. The body has been taken to Kasese Municipal Health Center III for postmortem examination before being handed over to the relatives for a decent burial,” Maate confirmed.
Maate further cautioned the public never to risk crossing rivers during or after heavy rains, at night when water volumes cannot be properly determined, or while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
