KAMPALA – The Church of Uganda, together with the Police, has launched swift inquiries to establish the cause of an altercation between a cleric and a Local Council Chairperson at Abim All Saints Church of Uganda in the Diocese of North Karamoja.

The drama allegedly erupted after the clergyman, identified as Rev. Canon Richard Ongom, and the LC II Chairperson, Innocent Oyoo, exchanged blows after disagreeing over a security announcement during worship.
Following the incident, the Church of Uganda has since confirmed it had learnt of a video circulating on social media showing a scuffle involving Rev. Canon Richard Ongom, a retired cleric currently serving on contract, and a Christian.
“We are concerned by the incident and wish to assure the Church and the general public that the matter is being followed up through the appropriate Church structures,” the statement read.
The Church of Uganda statement noted that the Police have established that the altercation broke out towards the tail end of the service, precisely during the announcements.
The statement indicates that both parties have since filed formal complaints, with statements duly recorded, PF3 forms issued, and thorough investigations currently in progress, though no arrests have been effected.
Meanwhile, the Church has stated that the priest presiding over a service is responsible for the order of worship, while emphasizing that it does not condone violence or physical confrontation.
The Church has further called for calm as Police establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and Church authorities address related ecclesiastical matters, thus urging the believers to remain calm while praying for peace.
