RUKIGA – The Rukiga District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Sylvia Alineitwe, has announced significant economic growth in families following the introduction of several income-generating projects in the district.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The Legislator was speaking at the groundbreaking launch of the Rukiga District Empowerment Skilling Initiative, dubbed “Emikono Yeitu,” an event held at Kyerero Primary School Playground, Bukinda Sub-county in Rukiga District.
Dr. Sylvia noted that her efforts have focused on practical interventions that directly uplift households, revealing that she has so far distributed about 8 million coffee seedlings, a move that has significantly boosted income at the family level across the district.
The legislator disclosed that she introduced a money-saving initiative at the village level, which has since grown to over 1 billion shillings, benefiting more than 600 saving groups in the entire district.
“In addition to several other projects we introduced, we have also introduced this Skilling Initiative to equip our people with different skills that will add to the generation of income at the grassroots level,” Dr. Sylvia noted.
She added that she recently raised the issue of health facilities in the district, which require urgent attention and improvement, not forgetting the need to secure vocational schools to equip community members with practical, marketable skills.
Presiding over the function as the Minister of State for Gender and Culture, Hon. Mary Kutesa, praised the government’s role in empowering women, who she said account for 75% of Uganda’s population but own only 6% of the land. She commended Dr. Sylvia for championing an initiative that empowers mostly women.
Hon. Mary Kutesa reported that the government has strengthened its efforts to empower people from the grassroots through various initiatives, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), and many other projects that are helping families escape poverty.
The Minister urged the people to utilize government funds dispatched to the grassroots well, and appealed to beneficiaries, especially the youth, to pay back the funds in time so that more people can benefit.
Attending the function, the Bushenyi District Woman MP, Hon. Annet Mugisha, challenged the people to have an income-generating project at home to grow their families.
She confirmed that as Parliamentarians, they will work to secure markets for produced products so that goods made in the region can find buyers and generate income for the people.
Meanwhile, the Rukiga District Chairperson, Mr. Simon Mutebi Rwamagyenda, appreciated Dr. Sylvia Alineitwe for starting the Skilling Initiative to equip people with skills and make them productive so they can earn a living.
He added that as district leaders, they will support the programs and help secure markets for the products so that people get money in their pockets.
The Rukiga District Skilling Initiative Coordinator, Mrs. Pamella Kihumuro, announced that they are set to create 42 centers in the district to equip all people around the district.
She noted that Rukiga District is disadvantaged by having small land, with farmers badly affected by dry spells, rendering many people very poor, but under Dr. Sylvia’s initiatives, they have improvised to help people earn from their hands.
The launch of “Emikono Yeitu” marks a renewed push to empower Rukiga residents with practical skills, financial inclusion, and sustainable income-generating activities.
