FORT PORTAL – Former presidential aspirant Kasami Rogers Mike has noted that the unfolding discussions on Tooro Kingdom’s future leadership have opened space for reflection, urging people to look back at their history and strengthen their cultural identity.

Kasami Rogers’ message follows the demise of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV last month at the age of 34 and the announcement of a new King, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, 56.

The former presidential aspirant reaffirmed the enduring traditions, norms and values that have sustained the institution of the Omukama for generations, emphasizing their role in preserving heritage, identity and continuity.

As consultations continue, leaders and well-wishers have called for calm dialogue, respect for process and collective responsibility to deepen unity, protect peace and ensure the Kingdom remains a source of pride for all.

He noted that the current conversations are significant for the Tooro people, who value dignity and continuity, and present an opportunity to preserve cultural strength while ensuring that future leadership remains grounded in Tooro values.

“First and foremost, I wish to extend my appreciation to everyone who has contributed to maintaining peace, dignity and stability. Your efforts matter, not only for today’s discussions, but for the long-term unity and progress of Tooro Kingdom,” Kasami stated.

Kasami’s remarks underline the view shared by many that constructive engagement must remain central, especially among those charged with guiding the Kingdom’s next steps.

Supporters of the process argue that when communities prioritize respect, discipline and togetherness, the outcomes of leadership consultations are more likely to reflect the will of the people and uphold the traditions that have stood the test of time.

About Tooro Kingdom

The Kingdom of Tooro, one of Uganda’s four traditional kingdoms in the western region, has its capital at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, and is home to the Batooro people.

Named for their elegance by a traveller near Butuku Hill, the Batooro speak Rutooro and are led by the Omukama wa Tooro, styled His Majesty, from the Babiito royal house linked to the ancient Kitara Empire.

History

Founded around 1830 by Rukirabasaija Kaboyo Olimi I Amooti. He was the eldest son of the Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara, Kyebambe III Nyamutukura, who broke away with loyal supporters and established his own independent kingdom in the areas of Mwenge, Burahya, Bunyangabu and Busongora.

Tooro was re-conquered by Bunyoro in the late 1880s, then restored in 1891 by Prince Daudi Kasagama Kyebambe IV with the help of British officer Captain Frederick Lugard. Kyebambe IV became famous for bringing Christianity and is referred to as the defender of modern Tooro.

Like all Ugandan kingdoms, Tooro was abolished in 1967 by Prime Minister Milton Obote and reinstated as a cultural institution in 1993 by President Yoweri Museveni. Today it functions more as a cultural institution than a political power.

The Modern Monarchy

– Olimi III (Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo) reigned 1965-1967 and again 1993-1995.- Rukidi IV

– Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV became Omukama on 12 September 1995 at age 3, one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs. He reigned for over 30 years.

The Crown Prince, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, is next in line and is slated to be enthroned after traditional rites at the Karambi Royal Tombs (Amagasani), including casting nine coffee berries into the predecessor’s resting place.
